As a SIWES student, you should also describe projects carried out during the internship period and the personal experience or transferable skills gained while participating in those projects. Breakdown of Chapter 3: The Backbone of Your SIWES Report

Like other chapters, the sections (headings and subheadings) in the third chapter of your SIWES report should be numbered accordingly. However, this part of the report has to be detailed with necessary charts or photographs tools to serve as proof of service. Nevertheless, avoid making the report too bulky.

3.1 Overview of Operations

This section enables you to briefly describe the type of operations conducted in the company as well as the roles played by the different departments in the organisation. 

You may recall that in Chapter 2 of your SIWES Report, you were advised to attach the organisational chart of the company. Hence, you may build on that information by expanding on the facilities present in each department.

3.1.1 Company Policy, Layout, Objectives and Strategies

You can get Information on the Company Policy, Layout and Strategies from the organisation’s official website or physical documentations. Alternatively, you can get such information from your superiors at the company.

3.1.2 Health Safety and Environmental Management (HSE) of the Company/Institution

It is required that every business must have a policy for managing health and safety. HSE policies are often implemented to ensure that the operations of the company do not tamper with the health and safety of the environment and living things in the society. In your report, include the official HSE policies of the company as well as practical measures taken by the company to implement them. 

3.2 Products and/or Services

Organisations are categorised into production companies and service-providers. In this section, list out or describe the products and/or services that the organisation deals in.

3.2.1 Machines/Software/Equipment

Depending on the type of company, describe the type of facilities (equipment, machines or software) used, especially those you have experience with. It is very important to attach pictures of such machines as well as equipment part list, if available. Attaching pictures of yourself working with the equipment is an added advantage. 

 Tips

  • State (the number of) personnel required to operate the equipment/machinery.
  • Use real workplace images rather than internet-downloaded ones.

3.2.2 Material Handling 

In a factory or manufacturing industry, there are specific conditions for storage, processing and transportation of raw materials. In this section, you should state how such materials are handled throughout from procurement to distribution. 

3.3 Quality Engineering (Control)

Standard companies ensure that their products are of good quality. This is done through quality assurance and control departments. The Quality Assurance Department is responsible for monitoring, inspecting and proposing measures to correct or improve an organization’s final products in order to meet established quality standards.

In your report, outline the steps taken by the company in that regard. You may also state the responsibilities and duties of the Quality Control/Quality Assurance personnel in the company and attach information (including pictures) of the tools and equipment used by them.

3.4 Maintenance Engineering 

Prevention is better and cheaper than cure. Even in an industrial setting, regular maintenance reduces the risk of equipment breakdown. Therefore, you should include details of the maintenance activities conducted in the organisation. This could be preventive maintenance or corrective maintenance. You can also include the company’s maintenance policy as a sub-heading.
