Remember the saying “time waits for no man”? Indeed, time is precious and working may not necessarily impede the search for education. Students who apply for this programme are often working-class citizens who for one reason or the other are time-constrained.
So, Part-time degree programmes in BUK are internally organized and conducted by the School for Continuing Education (SCE). These programmes are run by the management of the university without external funding from the government. Hence the unsubsidized tuition fee. Nevertheless, studying in such a system is quite flexible and affordable.

Brief Review of Bayero University School Fees
An average student may not spend much in pursuing an academic programme at this prestigious university. But then, it is noteworthy that even this modest cost may be much in the eyes of some, especially due to the subtle increase in the fees over the years. The table below illustrates the changes in fees for fresh engineering undergraduates over three sessions.
SESSION | ACCEPTANCE FEE (N) | REGISTRATION FEE (NGN) | HOSTEL FEE (N) | TOTAL FEES PAYABLE (N) |
---|---|---|---|---|
2017/2018 | 5,000 | 34,300 | 12,090 | 51,390 |
2018/2019 | 5,000 | 36,300 | 12,090 | 53,390 |
2019/2020 | 10,000 | 36,500 | 18,090 | 64,590 |
Graphically, the changes can be illustrated thus:
The changes in the registration fees were subtler. However, the abrupt spike in the other expenses generated a lot of complaints. Especially, the hostel fees. The institution provided reasons for the increments, They included added costs of maintenance and security, the nationwide inflation of prices among others.
Although,The price of accommodation on campus is still significantly cheaper than the lodgings found off-campus. Numerous people are forced to ‘squat’ with colleagues due to lack of funds. Most students that apply to federal universities are from middle-class or low-class backgrounds.
Hence, it isn’t surprising that many suffer to pay their fees. All the while remarking how ironical the phrase “Nigerians’ Right to Education” is. Thankfully, scholarships are made available to deserving students who are facing financial difficulties annually. In view of this, its not a completely hopeless case.
