There were times when, as a Nigerian student, 10k monthly stipends would not just cover your needs but leave you with change to save for the rainy days. Then, foodstuff was cheap and life was much more affordable.
How about now? Things have become very expensive, and life has become so hard that 10k can’t even take you half a month, even if you’re a mixer. When you check the hike in the price of garri in the market, you’ll know that if you don’t have a side hustle or some business to fetch you extra cash, you might not be able to afford garri someday.
This is why I have taken out time to show you 10 businesses you can start with 10k. All you need do is to check which of these you have an interest in, further your research on it, and start immediately.
Grab your popcorn, let’s have a sweet ride;
1. Take Food Orders
This is for you if you have a thing for cooking. You can start small, just a pot of food a day. Before getting a stall, you can start by taking orders online. Share it on your status, and your class groups, and let everyone know you take food orders, with time you’ll make good sales, get customers around, and then grow your brand. People will buy your food because students are too lazy to cook, and yeah, you can start with 10k.
2. Dropshipping
Dropshipping is simply promoting people’s products like shoes, bags, clothes, hair etc on your WhatsApp without having the product with you. You simply connect the buyer and the seller and get paid a commission after delivery. This is a good business because you’re not paying for anything, you make your money when you sell. So, rather than choke your status with memes, you can promote some products to make money.
3. Tutoring
Some students are intelligent, and skilled in teaching and tutorials but remain broke, don’t be one of them. Asking for payment for your tutoring skill is not a crime, it’s a win-win something especially when you’re undeniably good. You can start by offering coaching sessions in the evening and late at night as many students would be studying at that time. You can also advertise yourself online or in class.
4. Freelance Writing
We’re currently at the information stage and most communication is done through writing. So, if you’re a good writer who has expertise in a particular field, you can start taking freelance jobs. This wouldn’t affect your studies as you can work from anywhere and anytime, just get the job done. Many sites and blogs need good writers, if you can sell yourself, you’d make a whole lot of money in school.
5. Blogging
There’s a whole lot of money on this table. As a student, this is highly recommended. It allows you to grow your knowledge and expertise on various ideas and topics as you’d not just be discussing them, you’d also be researching them. WordPress is a good place to start. All you need is a laptop and an Internet connection. You can start with phone if laptop was a problem. But then, if you don’t know the nitty-gritty of blogging you might find it challenging. 6. Tailoring
This is for those who can sew good and quality clothes. You can start your tailoring business with nothing. Yes, absolutely nothing. You don’t need to have a sewing machine, simply promote your services online, get your customers, and pay standby tailors around to use their machines. You see, you have a running business without owning a shop.
7. Hairdressing/Barbing Saloon
Right within your lodge or hostel, you can make a whole lot of money. Looking good is a priority for many students whether boys or girls. So, if you’re good at hairdressing or barbing, you can help them look good while making yourself some money. You can start with less than 2k if you already have a clipper. Simply get a plastic chair and a mirror that’s all. Promote yourself within your lodge and have everyone come to you for hair making.
8. Phone & Laptop Repairs
Who doesn’t use a smartphone in school? Yeah, getting a system might be quite expensive but who doesn’t use a phone? No one! This means phones will keep getting bad and there’d be a need for a repairer around. You can learn how to fix a phone or laptop then simply get some tools for repairs and with good marketing, you’re good to go. Phone and laptop repairs are a very good way to make money in school and if you’re not on this table, you’re losing out on a lot of money.
9. Event Planning
Birthday parties, freshers night, hangouts, picnics, name it. There would always be one party or the other on campus. Those who know how to plan and master these ceremonies, will not be in lack. Event planning is a lucrative business in school and outside school, especially when you’ve successfully built your brand. All you need is good vibes and lots of friends, every necessary expense would be handled by your clients.
10. Shoe Making
Shoe-making is now a big deal on every campus. You’ll either find those who have a shop displaying quality shoes or those who wouldn’t let us breathe online, choking us with beautiful footwear. If there wasn’t profit in it, these vendors would have closed up. But guess what, they keep making themselves good cash and living comfortably in school. You can learn from these guys and start your brand right from your lodge. Don’t sleep on this.
That’s a rap!
