Rules and regulations helps maintain order in a large group of people. University rules lay the architecture of becoming adults. To become responsible and held accountable. Bayero University Kano has a student enrollment for about 8000 across its programs (source; UNiRank, 2020).

For faculty and staff to manage such a high volume of students, enforcing rules for the students is necessary. These rules are to protect the rights of students as well as the staff. (Academic & Non-academic). Other rules exist to foster healthy learning and teaching environment.

This article intends to expose the top ten regulations of Bayero University, Kano. And its implications following the decisions made by the Disciplinary Committee. Understanding this rule goes a long way in experiencing a juicy semester and section in the university

Indecent Dress Code

The University recognizes only decent dressing. It is defined in the student handbook and onboarding documents for students and staff respectively. Malpractice and Plagiarism

These are examples of academic misconducts across schools in Nigeria and aboard. Malpractice or academic misconduct detects the violation of the School’s policies. By tampering with grades, or by obtaining and distributing any part of a test or assignment. For example:

  1. Obtaining a copy of a test or examination before it is even administered.
  2. Copying from another student’s test or homework.
  3. Allowing another student to copy from your test or homework.
  4. Using materials such as textbooks, notes, or formula lists during a test without the lecturer’s permission.
  5. Collaborating on classwork or assignments without the professor’s permission.
  6. Having someone to write a paper for you.

Plagiarism, on the other hand, is representing another person’s work as your own. “Another person’s work” includes written papers, oral works, and ideas.  The work can be either published or unpublished. Examples of plagiarism may include;

  1. Purchasing a paper from a website,
  2.   Borrowing a paper your roommate wrote last semester.

However, it is possible to plagiarize by accident. This is common for students writing projects, term papers, seminars, and thesis. Thus, it is advisable to become creative, give credibility for copied ideas (referencing/quoting)

Relationship with Staff (Academic & Non-Academic)

The University understands that unhealthy relationships (abusive, exotic/emotional) with students by members of the faculty may question the integrity of learning and assessment.

Also, it is an offense for any student to fight (Physically or verbally) with any university staff in the course of discharging his/her lawful duties. It may distort the proper course of teaching, research and, /or community service at the School.

Conduct Outside the Campus

The institution expects its students to be good ambassadors when outside the campuses. Therefore, any student reported to the university authority for misconduct shall face a “DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE” for appropriate disciplinary action.

For example, a student conducts a negligent behavior resulting in the name and reputation of the School to be compromised.

Fighting and Assault

Fighting by students and using force on other students to obtain compliance or to cause harm is not tolerated. It disturbs the maintenance of order and discipline at the university being prejudiced or compromised.

Stealing

The institution prohibits its students from any act of stealing. Stealing of any form leads to expulsion. A similar context may involve a student assisting or encouraging other students to commit an act which constitutes misconduct in the student handbook (aiding and abating).

Rape

The management prohibits any case of rape or any act restricting freedom and practice of fundamental human right.

Consequently, expulsion is mandatory for any student with the misconduct of rape in the university. Similar cases may involve a student conducting him/herself in an indecent/improper manner to and restricts or attempt to restrict the freedom of movement of another student, staff member, contractor of the university or member of the public.

Forgery

Similarly, forgery is a criminal offense. However, if any student is found guilty of forgery shall be dealt with according to the laws. For example, a student makes misrepresentation regarding administrative process e.g. Degree, diploma, illness or a student in the university context infringes a person’s copyright or any other intellectual property rights.

Membership of Secret Cult

There is a strict prohibition to all students to partake in any membership of secret cults in Bayero University Kano. As a result of this, all forms of cult activities shall be punishable with expulsion.

Embezzlement of Association funds

Above all, It is characterized to be a big offense by any member of association embezzling the association’s fund. Consequently, the students’ disciplinary committee will take further appropriate punishment if found guilty.

Possible Sanctions Imposed for Misconduct

  1. The student(s) may be reprimanded;
  2. Permanently or temporarily have rights in regards to registration deprived:
    • Suspend registration for a specific period
    • Denied the right to reregister for a semester (s) or course (s)
    • Deny student privilege of re-registering at the university;
  3. Have credits or results revoked 
  4. Commanded to conduct community service or imprisonment
  5. Permanently expelled from university;
  6. Suspended from being awarding any degree or qualification;
